Fulda Laser-Check

Fulda's worldwide road safety initative

Ever since the company was founded in 1900, safety has always been Fulda's top priority. Apart from developping and testing its high-tech products using the latest technology to guarantee quality to the highest possible standard, Fulda  invests enormous efforts into road safety. As a result, Fulda created the Laser Check, a worldwide unique road safety initiative.

The safety campaign is based on a 'Profilo-meter' (tread meter), a laser-electronic high-tech device that measures the remaining tyre profile of a vehicle within seconds and confirms it down to a tenth of a millimetre with a test report.

Here is how it works

A laser measuring-head on a telescopic rod is moved over the treadprofile of the tyre. In the process the laser scans all the tread grooves of the tyre. The measured values are then stored using special software. Results can immediately be printed. The measuring range of the profilo-meter is between 0.0 mm and 11.0 mm.

The Profilometer has been especially developed for car tyres and the measuring accuracy is greatest in the critical profile height range up to 4 mm.

With the car Profilo-meter it has become possible to check a large amount of cars within the a short period of time and to draw drivers attention to wear rate of their tyres. This is especially useful when tyres have less than 3 mm profiledepth left. Whilst 1.6 mm is the legal minimum, it is recommended to replace tyres when they have less than 3 mm profile left (in case of winter tyres this is less than 4 mm)

Thanks to the Fulda-Laser-Check, a testing team operating in a large parking lot can check up to 3,000 vehicles daily.

Statistically, with the Lasercheck we have found that 8 out of 100 cars need their tyres replaced.

In 11 years the FULDA Lasercheck has checked more than 33 million tyres.
