Clever Driving with the Fulda Laser Check: A Fulda initiative to help drivers to drive carefully and economically.

Thanks to the 'Fulda Laser Check you will become aware of the dangers of insufficient tyre tread depth. The laser Check is a unique tool which allows to check tyre tread depths with a laser beam within seconds.

On special “traffic safety” days organized most of the time on large parking lots, Fulda hostesses will let you know in less than 1 minute the remaining tread depth of your 4 tyres.

But how does Laser Check work?

A laser measuring-head on a telescopic rod is moved over the treadprofile of the tyre. In the process the laser scans all the tread grooves of the tyre. The measured values are then stored using special software. Results can immediately be printed. The measuring range of the profilo-meter is between 0.0 mm and 11.0 mm.

The Profilometer has been especially developed for car tyres and the measuring accuracy is greatest in the critical profile height range up to 4 mm.

Insufficient tread depth: the danger continues to be underestimated

With the car Profilo-meter it has become possible to check a large amount of cars within a short period of time and to draw drivers’ attention to wear rate of their tyres. This is especially useful when tyres have less than 3 mm profile depth left. Although legislation still permits tires with a remaining tread depth of 1.6 mm, it is recommended to replace tyres when they have less than 3 mm profile left (in case of winter tyres this is less than 4 mm). When your tires are worn, the risk of aquaplaning dramatically increases and braking distances on wet road might almost double.

This is a danger which is still misjudged. A test campaign conducted by the Technical Control & Monitoring Association (Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung - GTÜ) revealed that 16 percent of the vehicles examined failed to meet the legally required level, and even 25 percent were “absolute borderline”.

Worldwide awards and honours

For this road safety initative Fulda won tremendous awards in Germany, Europe and worldwide.

·         'Goldene Brücke' from the DPRG (German Public Relations Association)

·         'Goldene Pyramide' from the BDVT (Association of German Sales Promoters and Sales Trainers)

·         'Silver Award' as a second-highest European award of the promoter’s associations

·         'European Gold Award' as the highest award from the European promotion trade journals

·         'World PRO Award', the highest award worldwide for successful sales promotion, Chicago/1996

·         'One PS for safety'

·         'Deutscher Verkehrssichheitspreis' (German Road Saftety Award) in gold

Since its introduction the Laser Check has become a genuine success story. It has already been used throughout Europe, in Brazil, the U.S and Canada.

For several years now, within a cooperative partnership, the Automobilclub von Deutschland (German Automobile Association – AvD) has been supporting the Laser Check as an important instrument in road safety.
