Driving in winter conditions

What you should consider when driving in winter conditions

Driving tips from the German racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck

Make sure you have optimal visibility conditions in the car. Therefore remove ice, snow or dirt from all windows, outside mirrors and headlights before departure. A maximum turned up heating and/or ventilation quickly helps against steamy windows since it ensures a good view from inside the vehicle.

A due safety margin is a basic condition, in order to reach the destination safely. Winter tyres, adapted speed and anticipating driving behaviour are yet some other recommendations to make sure you get through the winter safely.

But what if the car becomes unstable despite all caution?  In such a situation it is advisable to depress immediately the clutch. The driving wheels will roll freely and the car stabilises faster. Steer rapidly in the opposite direction, but only to some extent. Generally, a quarter steering wheel turn should be enough!

In general, braking before curve is safer than braking in curve. Also who reduces his speed before steering, passes the curve more easily. Wheels that are exempt from the motor torque can transfer more steering and directional control power.

Nowadays, most modern cars have ABS as a standard fitting. In case of need, you should rapidly depress  the brake pedal, so that kinetic energy is lowered. For vehicles without ABS, braking at quick intervals with depressed clutch is the most effective method for a best possible braking and steering the car at the same time.

Finally, always make sure you drive on good winter tyres.
